Donat Aduiovich Makijonek

Poruchik Donat Aduiovich Makijonek (19 May 1890 – 18 June 1941 (?)) was a World War I flying ace of Imperial Russian Air Service.
Donat Makijonek made nearly 600 combat flights during his flying career, participated in more than 30 aerial engagements and shot down nine enemy aeroplanes, five of which were officially confirmed. He mastered 14 types of aircraft. After starting service as a soldier in the autumn of 1911, in six years of service in both war and peace Makijonek had risen to the rank of Kapitan. For the heroism he displayed over the World War 1 battlefields, he was presented with many Russian awards, namely the soldier of St George Cross of all four classes and seven officer’s orders, including the highest, the Order of St George 4th Class. Allied Serbia awarded him the Order of the Orla Bialego 4th Class, and Poland subsequently decorated him with the Virtuti Militari 5th Class, Krzyz Walecznych, Medaille de la Victoire and the Krzyz Niepodleglosci. Makijonek died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz during World War 2, the exact date of his death being unknown. An ace of the Russian Imperial Military Air Fleet, Donat Makijonek had survived World War 1 and the Russian Civil War only to disappear without trace in a giant furnace of World War 2 that consumed millions of people.
